Hadn't heard of this magazine but my son asked me about it because the word on the street is that the level of reading is similar to the reading comprehension level on the MCAT. and it is thorough and includes wide ranging topics. Definitely a way to liven up my mental stimulation!
One of the best International News and Economic Magizines A review of The Economist Magazine, April 17, 2013 Submitted by: WOODIE from MIDLOTHIAN, VA

Amazing range of coverage! A review of The Economist Magazine, April 5, 2013 Submitted by: WannaLearn from Wilmington, NC
The Economist covers the USA and world economies as well as political and social issues better than the three magazines I currently read to keep me informed. It may cost more but well worth the price! The economists appears to be the only news source that covers the globe. All others including radio, TV, newspaper, and magazine venues have apparently reduced coverage to what they think is of interest to their audiences. In short, the dumming down of the USA is rapidly continuing in every milieu. Thanks Economists for being different!!!

Not a fan A review of The Economist Magazine, March 21, 2013 Submitted by: teach
The print is really small and there are so many "articles" it is too overwhelming. I like to read a magazine to sit and relax for an hour or so, but if you were to read this entire magazine it would take a whole day. There are not "graphs" or "tables" with articles, just pages and pages of small print articles. Way too much information presented in such a dull format.

My speech students and I really enjoy the magazine. I have a few students who focus on extemporaneous speaking about current news-worthing topics, and they seem to find it handy each weekend during competition. I also enjoy how it is full of articles and not advertisements.

A little bit of everything A review of The Economist Magazine, January 31, 2013 Submitted by: Hubba from Mililani, HI
Although The Economist doesn't offer the depth that one might find in some other news/culture/arts magazines, the articles are informative and for the most part well-written. My only real criticism has to do with the overlapping features. I frequently see issues where a story is featured in the "week in review" portion, the "leader" portion and then again later in the issue. The overall readability of the magazine would be enhanced if stories were presented in a more unified fashion. I'm sure the writers and editors at The Economist have their reasons for the current layout of the magazine, but as a writer and someone who consumes quite a bit of news writing from various publications, the layout "problem" is one I noticed immediately.

Good For What Ails You A review of The Economist Magazine, January 7, 2013 Submitted by: Pepsi Cowboy from Tulsa, Ok
The Economist magazine is one of the best at giving you the straight scoop on what is happening around the world. The scope is brilliant in that it covers what economic factors are in play in all of the world's economies. It gives you hope, it takes the wool off of your eyes, it's reality. When you get it, you can't wait to sit down and read it. Then you can't put it down. It's what all magazines should be.

The Economist is all that it promises. I especially appreciate the non-American perspective of US concerns. It's a very nice compliment to NPR news, CNN and FOX, which I also pay attention to. Assuming continued integrity, I'll likely make The Economist a staple subscription.
A review of The Economist Magazine, December 27, 2012 Submitted by: Debby from Honolulu, HI
The Economist is the only real weekly news magazine left, and I think it is the best. It does what Time and Newsweek used to do: report on weekly events that define our global society and develop major themes that affect all societies. It is sensitive to its readers and supplies them with information that they need to formulate judgments about an accelerating world.

Otherwise.. I think it's balanced and actually it leans a little left.. fiscally conservative and socially liberal. great mix for a global view.

Excellant world economy news magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, November 29, 2012 Submitted by: Dean66 from Lincoln, Mt
The Economist brings brief to the point news that ties together the global economies by country and region. The journalists are careful to include current political and geographical nuances that affect global finances, which allows readers to determine the strengths and weaknesses of countries around the world that seemingly don't make the national news on TV and Cable.

Educational Resource and Generally a Better Magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, November 1, 2012 Submitted by: AHS Teacher
I have found this as a way to show real world connections between classroom lessons and current events. It is always current because of the frequency with which it comes, but also because it is global, and exposes children to more ideas.
As a learner myself, I find that it provides me with better reading and generally I am more intelligent after reading that.
A review of The Economist Magazine, November 1, 2012 Submitted by: Fred from Lolo, Mt
The Econonmist has always been a great magazine for current events. It has world wide coverage of every continent with great in-depth articles of current issues that affect the United States.
The Economist does not have the fluff that Time and other news magazines have included in their updates. If I wanted the current culture of the United States I would subscribe to the fan magazines. The Economist gives me solid information on what is happening politically and economically across the world.

As a French, Spanish, and ESL teacher and someone who enjoys keeping up with world news and events, I absolutely love "The Economist" magazine. The articles are extremely well written and informative. In addition, articles are organized in the Table of Contents by geographic areas of the world (Europe, Middle East and Africa, Asia, The Americas) for the current week's newsas well as other categories such as Business, Science and Technology, Books and arts. While this is one magazine I always want to read cover to cover, when time is short, it is easy to get an overview from the Table of Contents to select articles which most interest the reader.

The Economist provides world news not easily found elsewhere. A review of The Economist Magazine, July 26, 2012 Submitted by: Paul from Minneapolis, MN
I enjoy reading the Economist for the world news it provides, but am often confronted by the fact it has a big-government, liberal worldview - nothing new there. We Christian conservatives deal with thisantagonistic-to-our-fatih-and-valuesworldview as citizens of the old USSR dealt with Communist propaganda-filled Pravda: read between the lines, and take as much stock in what is not said as in what is. Still, it's shocking that so many find comfort in pretending there is a world without a Creator, who live as though there were no God, and who actually trust the State instead.
Thank God for America's Founders for their vision of individual freedom through limited government, free enterprise, and public acknowledgement that our rights come from our Creator.

Interesting information, but shallow A review of The Economist Magazine, July 17, 2012 Submitted by: 1zapz from Washougal, WA
This magazine is a bit like reading Time or Newsweek, but with a more international slant. I did find, however, that an education article on charter schools to be slanted in favor without substantiation of the position. Their position of "more is better" does not support the fact of being an improvement on the "traditional" public system, since the public system has been over-burdened and underfunded for years.
I gave it a 2 star because of the shallowness, but I would give it a 4 star if it wasn't so biased - I found it to have an English/American viewpoint on most issues and, while I am an American, I would rather just have the facts and form my own opinions.

Interesting Global Perspectives A review of The Economist Magazine, July 5, 2012 Submitted by: MhdMama from Moorhead, MN
As a teacher of American History, I find myself being a bit myopic - obviously "Americancentric." Without a doubt, The Economist has really opened my eyes to what the rest of the financial world is thinking, doing, and anticipating. Albeit a bit conservative, this British periodical has proffered an excellent financial education for me!
Balanced and cosmopolitan A review of The Economist Magazine, July 5, 2012 Submitted by: Papa Ken from Hugo, MN
I am not an economist, nor even a business person, but I enjoy the broad coverage of The Economist. It's essentially world-wide perspective and balanced coverage of events and people give this British publication a level of credibility. That it is well-written is a plus, also. The occasional special interest issues are informative and lend a dimension of depth that many other magazines of this type do not demonstrate.
Great comprehensive coverage of the world's economy and political issues. A review of The Economist Magazine, July 5, 2012 Submitted by: mslatta from KERNERSVILLE, NC

Love the concise up-to-date articles. Not wordy. Each article can give pause to the reader by giving enough info so that a person could really envision how this could possibly impact on his/her own life. Global info/special reports I enjoy so much. The S.R. on Cuba was super.I went to two discussions about Cuba and both speakers mentioned the Economist Special Report on Cuba by recommending people get the issue. Both of these speakers had visited Cuba within the past -6-8 months. Every article written is so worthwhile. The Economist is the best magazine to give a true global/domestic/financial picture of todays world

Fascinating Articles on a Variety of Subjects A review of The Economist Magazine, June 14, 2012 Submitted by: NB
Despite the title, the Economist has articles on a variety of topics. For those of us who want well-researched, in-depth information about important issues worldwide, this is a great magazine. It doesn't resort to tabloid-like stories to grab attention (unlike some other so-called news magazines), but instead delivers consistently high quality, worthwhile info.
Covers a variety of topics. A review of The Economist Magazine, June 14, 2012 Submitted by: Aurora from Salem, VA
The Economist is very informative and written in easy to understand language. It think it is the best magazine for international economic issues.

Great news magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, May 30, 2012 Submitted by: xtremeaxn from Alexandria, VA
I have been reading Economist for quite sometime now and it covers news from all around the world. The sections are written in detailed but sometimes I think that the article comes to abrupt end. Overall a great magazine and I look forward to it on every saturday.
Very good contents, would be even better if it would abstain from ideological judgements A review of The Economist Magazine, May 29, 2012 Submitted by: markobucik from Washington, DC
The Economist is well know for its supreme quality of coverage and writing. However, I regret that sometimes the editorial line is more ideological as it should be. The most notable examples from the past include the support for the Iraqi war, support for the election of David Cameron in the UK and Bush in the US. More recently, the newspaper described the French Presidential candidate as "dangerous" because he argues for greater social justice in France. The Economist should refrain from such comments and rather focus on the excellent journalism it has been providing for so long.

Excellent weekly magazine on global news A review of The Economist Magazine, May 22, 2012 Submitted by: none from Cary, NC
The Economist has met my expectations by providing a broad overview of international politics, economics, finance, science and techology, books and art on a weekly basis I also enjoy their special global, indepth reports like the current one on international banking. I read the daily newspaper but really miss the international global perspectives of what what is going on through out the world. Now I know and enjoy being a more aware citizen of world events since subscribing to The Economist.
Comprehensive World News A review of The Economist Magazine, May 22, 2012 Submitted by: Lars from Mercersburg, PA

Well done.
A great international magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, May 22, 2012 Submitted by: KonaME from Kailua Kona, HI
The Econoist covers issues that matter around the world. It does so from a different perspective of what can be found in other magazines, online or on news TV. All the stories are very well written and interesting. I read the magazine from cover to cover.
Best world view A review of The Economist Magazine, May 22, 2012 Submitted by: MJ from White Plains, NY
Best in-depth magazine ever, with the exception of Scientific American. It's very refreshing to have a non-USA-centric presentation of US news, plus invaluable to keep up with world events. Though my views tend to be liberal, the Economist presents the conservative side of most issues in an intelligent way.

Top political analyses, broad coverage A review of The Economist Magazine, March 27, 2012 Submitted by: Terry from Silver Spring, MD
The Economist is simply the best magazine for in-depth political analysis, coverage of international events, and explorations of financial and business issues. The print subscription comes with an online subscription, so the full content can also be accessed online or via a smartphone. If you want a solid overview of issues and occurrences, with an informed analysis of key events, this magazine is worth the price. If you prefer cutesy stories, sound-byte-style journalism, and glitzy ads, go with one of the competitors.

I count on this every week to provide an international (not necessariy British) perspective on the news. I work my way through Time and Newsweek pretty quickly. Then The Economist provides news and analysis that is both broader and deeper than these two excellent magazines.

The Economist gives you an international perspective on news, whether it's about the U.S. or the rest of the world. Great coverage, with a moderate (socially left-of-center, fiscally right-of-center) viewpoint. If you can only get your news from one source, this should probably be it.

The Economist A review of The Economist Magazine, November 8, 2011 Submitted by: Tonya
As a teacher, it is important we are staying up on current events around the world. The economist does a great job of providing it's reader with worldly news we all should be aware of. Although it is a bit deep and over my head at times, I enjoy getting the weekly magazine. I often skim most article and read the ones most relevent to me. However, I have become a more informed person since I have started reading the Economist.

The Economist offers direct and readable information about issues impacting my day-to-day financial life. My knowledge level about the economy and financial issues we face today is greatly improved by reding The Economist. I have enjoyed this magazine so much that after I am done, they are being sent overseas to my nephew and his company serving in Afganistan. It is even more importqnt that they can keep up with the current issues impacting their families while they are away defending our rights and freedoms.

I never read The Economist before June. I had been missing much. It has a wealth of in-depth articles on a wide-range of current events. My only wish - it had more and larger pictures. I guess the abundance of content precludes more visuals. I am forced to admit that this is admirable; light-weight graphics have become epidemic in lesser news magazines.

In All honesty, I like it. A review of The Economist Magazine, April 25, 2011 Submitted by: Prez from San Francisco, CA
It is thorough and detailed with the news, and often breaks down the same events as they affect other world factors. The editors have thought a bit about each feature, and analyze the current impact on the economy, a region or country, or the world, This magazine respects, in my view, the intelligence of the reader, and often discusses several options or opinions. It is so very much unlike a People or Time magazine, and does not always stick to the "American" POV; in that regard, it is honest because it gives us another voice.
Very informativeon many topics A review of The Economist Magazine, April 12, 2011 Submitted by: Pete Econ

New Perspective A review of The Economist Magazine, March 1, 2011 Submitted by: elrae from Bozeman, MT
As an American, I have access to plenty of American-based news sources, which maintain viewpoints along a very long but FLAT, left to right continuum. This is an excellent source for off-the-beaten-path subjects and viewpoints.
I teach, and greatly value the importance of learning. I don't expect to have the time or interest to read the magazine cover to cover on most occasions, but that isn't the point. I can find at least one new, interesting story or idea about the world every week. Love it.
Great deal on smart news A review of The Economist Magazine, March 1, 2011 Submitted by: ctoddr
The Economist is "newspaper" written for a readership that is educated and world-aware. Enormously better than Time or Newsweek or US News and World Report (does that even exist anymore?). And it costs more, but for that money you'll enjoy writers who assume you have better than an 8th grade education. Or, read this and get an education -- that's been my MO...

A review of The Economist Magazine, February 15, 2011 Submitted by: Economistfan from Tulsa, OK
The Economist is the most comprehensive and thorough news magazine in print. Writing from a British perspective, but friendly to the United States, it offers coverage of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe EVERY WEEK. It also has the droll British humor that made Monty Python famous. I cannot recommend it too highly. (I have no connection with the Economist other than that of an avid reader)
Just too good........ A review of The Economist Magazine, February 9, 2011 Submitted by: Mornmoos from Palmdale, CA

Informative and Important A review of The Economist Magazine, February 1, 2011 Submitted by: DOWNUNDER VISITOR from FARGO, ND
The Economist is an informative and current collection of happenings in the world. The qualtiy and coverage surpasses any newspaper and without the newsprint.
It is the only magazine that I read cover to cover. The writing is clear and straight forward. I do note that the word" reckons" appears frequently. I find the reporting unbiased.
The presentation is excellent and graphics clear. The advertising is not offensive or overwhelming. An excellent weekly read for a 65 year old who does not watch US television.
Best overview of what is happening in the world A review of The Economist Magazine, February 1, 2011 Submitted by: BugApple1945 from Oklahoma city, Ok
I was out of town on vacation for 10 days. I had 2 Economists waiting for me when I got home. I'm a very fast reader, but it took a full week of evenings to catch up. If it wasn't for the Econmist and NY Times I wouldn't be able to keep up with what is going on around the world. The Daily Oklahoman provides good coverage of the state and sports, but not national and international news. I guess I shouldn't have paid for a print sy script ion. I have an IPad, and could pay to download it.
Best world news & politics weekly by a long measure A review of The Economist Magazine, February 1, 2011 Submitted by: Digitaldiver from Danville, CA
Thoughtful reporting and insight from a worldly perspective (as opposed to the US-centric view from Time, Newseek, US News). The weekly format give a more time for perspective than typical instant-news dailies or websites.

long time subscriber A review of The Economist Magazine, January 26, 2011 Submitted by: Rigoberto
I've subscribed to this magazine for 10+ years, since studying international economics in college, and international business as an MBA, as it offers an extremely readable, and subtly humerous, style of writing on a myriad of topics, both business and anthropologically oriented. I particularly enjoy the international compenent of this magazine; specifically, it provides a broader perspective on US and international issues that helps prevent the tunnel vision that would likely develop if one read solely US periodicals.
Highly recommended
This is one of the top news magazines A review of The Economist Magazine, January 25, 2011 Submitted by: tricycle222 from Oakland, CA
The writing is superb. I wanted to get a news magazine to balance my reading in The Nation each week. I find the reporting to be honest and timely. I especially like the ability to read it on my iPad. The Economist app is the best magazine reader available. Since I carry my iPad everywhere, I have my reading with me at all times.

The Economist's international news and analysis are unparalled. A review of The Economist Magazine, December 28, 2010 Submitted by: Eric from Cedar Falls, IA
The depth and breadth of The Economist's coverage of international news and analysis are without parallel. I have never met anyone who could completely read every Economist issue every week because of its extensive coverage. Anyone who could manage this feat would be unbelievably well informed. I highly recommend the Economist to anyone who is interested in the multitude of issues that our modern world and its interconnected global economy faces on a day to day basis.

While providing top drawer observations of science, global communities, and entertainment, don't expect an unbiased perspective on the subject of economics and politics. This publication has matured into full on progressivism...a Central Banking and Leftist leaning propoganda machine.

Great financial-political magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, July 6, 2010 Submitted by: jp
I thought that the Economist would cover only financial things and that much of it would be in technical jargon but I was mistaken. They do cover a lot of financial news and analysis but in easy to understand language. They also cover a lot of political events and analysis. They have some reviews of books and arts and they even had a technology special recently. so overall this magazine includes a lot more than I thought it would and enjoy reading it very much.

The Economist is a wonderful magazine for those who like to keep up with economic trends all over the world. There is a section for news from the United States and sections for news from all countries where economic news is important to the world. The reporting seems objective and gives the pertinent facts of the stories. This is a weekly magazine and can sometimes be overwhelming because of all the information that comes to you each week. I highly recommend this magazine to those who need to know what is going on in the economic world today.

A review of The Economist Magazine, April 5, 2010 Submitted by: Johnny from Cummington, MA
Look at recent covers of this magazine and wonder with me why The Economist cover artists consistently portray President Obama as small, ineffectual, or damaged. It's true that few news magazines have the breadth of coverage as this one, but the language in their reports is often slanted. I consider myself a moderate independent voter and, still, The Economist is too right of center for me; I will not renew my subscription.

The Economist is essential for anyone outside the UK focusing on business, economics, comparative politics, Europe or International Relations. It is clearly biased (as all similar publications are) but it wears its bias on its sleeve. Its different viewpoint contrasts with and illuminates all the local source material you are flooded with.

I often find that money is at the core of not only business news but also just news. The Economist is also a great resource for our household in making financial decisions about our retirement, large purchases, or just investing. The current events are also a great source of information that is not based upon sensational stories to increase ratings. It is right to the point!

Best for world news review A review of The Economist Magazine, January 12, 2010 Submitted by: spoton from charlottesville, va
The Economist is simply the most comprehensive review of world news available today -- and this has been the
case for a good many years. Each issue is a compendium of focused, crisply written pieces on the range of
major news and current issues of regions and individual countries across the globe. Weekly theme sections
present the reader with an in-depth examination of complex issues connecting context with potential
consequences. It provides the regular reader with a global perspective mostly missing from most US news
magazines and most newspapers.

One of the Best Magazines that Exists! A review of The Economist Magazine, January 5, 2010 Submitted by: Jeff Z from Cleveland, OH
More than any magazine I have ever read, the Economist is one of the most intellectually stimulating; it offers a unique blend of important topics that all too often are diminished in modern popular media. This is one of few publications that I will read practically cover to cover. Even though the internet is my primary news source on a daily basis, The Economist is one that I will demand to have in hard-copy until they stop printing!
Intelligent! A review of The Economist Magazine, January 2, 2010 Submitted by: Perk from Lebanon, IL
My first issue of the Economist reminded me of how intelligent journalism can be, and certainly shone in comparison to the agenda-driven "journalism" seen on Fox and elsewhere in the US.
If the US is to stay near the lead in the political and economic world of this decade, we need to read the ideas and understand the views of the rest of the world. The Economist helps us do that.

i started reading the economist in 1990; while living in Basel, Switzerland. For the next two years, while living in Switzerland and Australia, i kept up with this magazine and enjoyed the global view of life it provided.
I've been back in USA since the mid 90's and have kept the subscription going ever since. Every week, i make the time to read this magazine from cover to cover. It continues to provide me with good insights as to the state of affairs of the world; as well as providing a unique perspective on the USA.

After reading only 2 issues of the Economist, my husband and I find it the most interesting news magazine ever. I have long wanted to know about news globally, not just in the USA. The Economist does a much better job than not only other news magazines, but it beats the national TV news also. We are tired of hearing about Hollywood stars, their lives, and movies. It is so refreshing to learn about world happenings, as well as our own. The Economist also presents our country's news as well as other news magazines.

The Economist is the best financial and best place to obtain information from around the world. The Economist not only focuses its attention to the details of the economy, it provides information on the world, and how it impacts our everday lives.
The Economist has wonderfully written articles on all subjects. The information is provided with less of an American Bias, and that is important in obtaining todays news.

Fair and Balanced ???????? A review of The Economist Magazine, November 26, 2009 Submitted by: Eugene from Orinda, CA
As I read the Economist for the first time, I'm somewhat surprised to see some of
the one-sided type journalism made popular by FOX NEWS. This just isn't true journalism, rather
it's advocacy for very different governing standards than those duly elected at the 2008 election.
Isn't it time for magazines like The Economist to hire a broad spectrum of analysts. Why doesn't
Paul Krugman get to write in your journal ?? The greatness of our American Republic is our
ability to swing "left" and "right" and find compromise. Governments without that ability
are some of the least successful governments on earth. I hope America won't have to go down the
partisan path. Magazines like yours can bring us together if they will truly use "fair and balanced" as
their standard. Interesting how the most unfair and least balanced FOX has co-opted that phrase.
I don't plan on renewing my subscription if I don't see a more balanced presentation in these
coming months. Thank you for listening,

Realistic or Just Plain Negative? A review of The Economist Magazine, November 24, 2009 Submitted by: Pilotdave from MA
We have now read this magazine for nearly two months. While we were prepared for - and expecting - a more-balanced outlook and more inciteful reporting as compared to, say, Time or Newsweek, we were not expecting a near-continuous negative perspective on President Obama's policies and performance. It is difficult to believe that there is nothing in either as evidenced by the past several months about which The Economist could find positive things to say. Perhaps the magazine's editors should take a walk in the hopes of gaining a fresh, less jaundiced perspective. We are unlikely to renew.

The Economist does a great job at keeping me up to snuff on all the latest issues in America and the world. My only problem is finding the time to read all of the informative, clearly written articles before the next issue comes.
intelligent but flawed A review of The Economist Magazine, November 17, 2009 Submitted by: yankeedam from Westport, CT
Economist may be the best news mag out there, "Time Magazine for grownups" as one guy called it, but at its hefty price it had to please me. I have two complaints: First and least, it whips through USA news with half a dozen articles and then explores, in depth, developments in countries that will never affect my life. Sorry to seem provincial, but I'm one of those dummies who still can't draw a map of Africa without peeking. The other fault is what finally got me to cancel (thanks, MagLine, for your great service): Economist has subtle but rigid control over its writers. They want Obama to send more troops to Afghanistan (easy for Britain to say), and every article about any subject seems to slip in an editorial to "send troops already." Not ethical journalism, in my humble opinion.
Everything you need to know and more A review of The Economist Magazine, November 17, 2009 Submitted by: Michael C.
The Economist is one of those publications that is great in the sense that it is truely global. If you ever wondered what happens in other parts of the world, from food trends to economic meltdowns, the economist is the magazine to get. Best of all, it's so packed with information (there are very few ads beyond classifieds), each issue is usually enough to keep you reading all week. If you can make it through an issue and say you really read and understood every article, you deserve a promotion!
A review of The Economist Magazine, November 10, 2009 Submitted by: Cathy Stokes from Granite Falls,, NC
The Economist gives a wide viewing of multiple topics.
It's viewpoint is more worldwide than Times and hits on many more subjects. You never know what you are going to read about which means it is unpredictable and that in itself makes it unique as well as interesting.
Great World News A review of The Economist Magazine, November 10, 2009 Submitted by: Shanes Realty from Spatanburg, SC
I think of the Economist as World Press on steroids. It is chocked so full of great articles from around the globe that I simply can't find enough time to read half of them before the next magazine arrives. It is the only magazine I find worthy of subscribing to.

Right-of-Center Newscoverage A review of The Economist Magazine, October 20, 2009 Submitted by: Daniel from Riverside, CA
It's great to be informed, of course. It would be somewhat of an exaggeration for someone to claim to be informed without getting a broad range of perspectives, and a variety of opinion. For me, The Economist is an essential component of this. Smart, reasonable, and well-written, I appreciate The Economists' Tory take on subjects even when I don't exactly agree.
Overrated A review of The Economist Magazine, October 20, 2009 Submitted by: amador
It's good to be informed in worlwide events under the cover of one single publication, but _The Economist_ is just an expanded series of op-eds on politics from a centre right standpoint. No individual journalist will take responsibility for its contents because (this one of this magazine's dirty secrets) many of the writers are recent graduates or current grad students at UK and US elite universities. Really smart guys but sorely lacking in professional experience.
If you don't believe this, read the articles closely and you'll notice that they are merely an illustration of social, political and economic thought of some major professors. Notice also the judgmental tone. Despite the senatorial tone of its writing, the articles generally lack a lot in terms of fact checking and I'd even say human empathy.
If you're interested in politics, it's a good magazine, but take its prescriptive attitude with a grain of salt. For economic and consumer news, I recommend _Business Week_. For social issues, definitely _Harper's_
Economist lacks umph A review of The Economist Magazine, October 20, 2009 Submitted by: michael714 from Newbury Park, CA
Hello,
I was expecting more from the Economist. Right now, I also have a subscription to Times and I find that their articles are more informative. I was expecting to get more detailed and technical analysis from the Economist and I've been disappointed. The magazine offers too much in the way of opinion and not enough in technical details.

Great Magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, August 5, 2009 Submitted by: erasmus777
The Economist is a wonderful magazine. As others have said, it does a great job of highlighting major world news in a succinct manner. For those who criticize it for "liberal" bias, you've missed the mark. If anything, the The Economist has a libertarian slant (or "liberal" in the European sense) so it's not easy to categorize by the usual American political categories. To give you an example, since 1980 The Economist has endorsed the following presidential candidates: Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, Kerry, and Obama. The latter two were fairly reluctant, so you can always be sure, that whatever the editorial stance, the articles and positions you read will be well-reasoned even if you disagree with them.
It's like a information punch in the face A review of The Economist Magazine, July 27, 2009 Submitted by: mskiles314
Each weekly issues contains more information than a month's worth of Newsweek, Time, and US News combined. It's like those publications are news magazines for children and this the adult version; I find it difficult to get finished with each issue before the next one arrives. You think you're informed? This weekly will show you how ignorant you are.

Same old tired liberal philosophy A review of The Economist Magazine, June 30, 2009 Submitted by: Thoughtful conservative
The Economist has interesting articles, and lacks the distressingly common preoccupation with so called celebrities. However, it has the same old tired liberal bais of many current events magazines. I bought a trial subscription a couple years ago, but let it run out without renewing, due to this liberal dogma.

Great magazine. Overwhelming amount of material to read in a week but that's my problem, not theirs... I need to learn how to pick and chose better. They've resisted the "need" to be trendy and thus "relevant" which is a good thing. Strong US/Euo bias, but that's better than the US-centric view of so many other readily available news magazines.

High Quality Magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, May 6, 2009 Submitted by: Professor Russell Eisenman from Edinburg, TX
This is a high quality magazine, dealing with many different things, some of which are very interesting to me, others that I skip: from cars (which was of great interest to my neighbor Ram but not to me) to how evolutionary psychology can help us understand things like crime (top quality article), to politics throughout the world. Some of the politics stuff is of interest to me, especially the parts about the USA. Also, there were several very good articles about innovation and how the USA, India and China lead the world in this area.
I find the articles often show high quality thinking and are well written. Those lads from the UK have done a terrific job in putting out a high quality magazine.
If you are like me, you will skip most of the articles but, nonetheless, the ones you read will be of sufficient high quality that you are glad you have this publication.

Every week and full of bad news A review of The Economist Magazine, May 5, 2009 Submitted by: superstar
I like to know what's going on (really going on) in the world and when I finally get a periodical that tells me I find it somewhat depressing. As a weekly periodical this is overwhelming. As soon as I get through one whopping issue another one comes. Who has the time for all of this magazine reading? The stories are interesting, the information is compiled from multiple sources and having them all in one magazine is convenient.

Excellent magazine - not unbiased! A review of The Economist Magazine, April 16, 2009 Submitted by: Shorty
I read the Economist pretty much cover to cover every week, for its well-rounded coverage of world events. I can't think of any other publication that does as well at condensing the information you need to have to be an informed citizen of the world into a magazine-sized publication.
That said, DONT believe the silly reviews above that say it's unbiased! Its stance is profoundly in favor of neoliberal, free-market economics of the Adam Smithian variety. So it's hardly surprising the Economist comes out strongly in support for globalization, deregulation, foreign investment, the development of new third-world markets, and free trade as the appropriate motor for development and the promotion of global well-being.
If that's not an ideology, I don't know what is. Read the Economist for many reasons, but don't read it because you think it's unbiased. In fact, one of its prime virtues is taking a strong interpretive stance: then you can either agree or disagree.

Excellent Alternative Weekly A review of The Economist Magazine, March 31, 2009 Submitted by: Dave
I find The Economist an excellent alternative to Newsweek or Time. The articles are more in depth than those weeklies and they have a wider perspective, in part because the magazine is not so America-centered. That's refreshing. I read Newsweek every week, too, so the comparison I am making is clear. I am getting used to the more newsprint/small photo layout of The Economist.

A free-market advert in disguise A review of The Economist Magazine, March 3, 2009 Submitted by: Mike
I will not ever spend my own money on this magazine. It has a quietly and sneakily hidden agenda pushing the free-market Milton Friedman nonsense that has drifted us over the past four decades into the financial meltdown we are now suffering.
I find value here by informing myself about the arguments waged by those who would like to keep me believing that freedom is chosing which store to shop in.

By far one of the most well-written English magazines out there, bar none! A review of The Economist Magazine, February 25, 2009 Submitted by: ChinaManDan from Pullman, WA
This is my first year subscribing to The Economist and I LOVE it to death. Not only does the style and rich language of advocacy journalism just gush out from its seams, but it's so good I have great difficulty just finding the time to read it back-to-back. As a college freshman, it's wonderful to pore over its contents ranging from economics, world affairs, and the only obituaries that I actually feel a pang of sadness after reading it (the recent obituary about the Russian journalist was particularly heartbreaking). The variety of stories that are not often found in American counterparts is awfully refreshing as well, taking a more world-view perspective rather than the often repetitious kind found in American media that focuses on celebrity issues far more than, say, looking into cholera outbreaks in Zimbabwe. And although it, clearly, defines its stances with classical liberalism albeit with a carbon tax, it is one of the least biased readings that attempts to describe both sides of an issue (but sometimes I wish they could make up their minds on a political stance) and they seem to, unusually, love to take criticism from its readers. When compared to Time or Newsweek there is no argument as to whose is superior. Buy it. I promise this will be something worth your buck.

The best, most erudite news magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, January 13, 2009 Submitted by: AK Sailor from Anchorage, AK
American maps place us in the center of the world, as does our news coverage. The rest of the world has a different viewpoint that is equally valid and perhaps more instructive. The Economist is beautifully written and extensively researched. The entire planet is the focus with in-depth articles on each week's ares of conflict, be they economic or social, military or civilian. We have found that their analysis of America's political system are spot-on and allow us to see ourselves as others see us.
If the Economist has a problem, it is that it takes more than a week to plow through the magazine: it's just too rich for a cursory review. We've been subscribers, on and off, for many years, but with a bit more time to read, we are thrilled to subscribe again.

I especially like the variety of articles. THE ECONOMIST is NOT an easy read. No quick flipping through the pages. With my current life-style, it takes me at least a week to finish an issue. But I enjoy it.
Okay Economics Magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, January 13, 2009 Submitted by: JAC from Salem, NH
This is a good magazine and I was hoping to use it more in my 10th grade economics class, but it may be a bit too advanced for my students. Overall, not bad.
Packed with great info for social studies A review of The Economist Magazine, January 13, 2009 Submitted by: ohiobear1920 from Greenville, OH
This magazine, The Economist, is just packed with a lot of great information dealing with domestic and world issues. This works well for me since I'm a social studies teacher always looking for current event issues and historical connections. I like the academic nature of the magazine in that is goes heavy on content and light on the media in the form of images. Great for the mature reader who wants to be challenged with new ideas or events they only thought of briefly.

Favorite weekly resource. Period. Ever. A review of The Economist Magazine, December 24, 2008 Submitted by: dgordic from Cape Coral, Fl
I am a person who truly despises the hype and hyperbole of the mainstream media. I don't care about Britney, OJ or the latest scandal of the week. I want to know what is *really* going on in the world- from every aspect. And so I scour (reputable) alternate news sources- the BBC and online newspapers for the most part. Imagine how pleased I was when your magazine arrived and I found much of the information I wanted gathered for me, with indepth articles on the major topics of the week. I can't believe that I didn't turn to the Economist sooner. My only problem? Now I've got to find the time to read it cover to cover

This is the best, most intelligent, informative magazine on the world's stage! A review of The Economist Magazine, December 23, 2008 Submitted by: Senior citizen from Austin, TX
As unexpected as possible, The Economist consistently manages --on a weekly basis-- to draw seemingly unrelated events into a comprehensive world view. The interconnectivity of isolated situations throughout the world provides one a global perspective! The special sections are books in themselves.

Excellent news source, particularly finance/econ-related A review of The Economist Magazine, December 3, 2008 Submitted by: ATL Student
The Economist is known as one of the oldest, most upstanding news sources in English. The Economist focuses on current major political and economic issues and provides either short clippings or more in-depth coverage on these issues. The Economist, as a whole, leans to the right--trade liberalism and globalization are two of its tenets--but nevertheless represents well the mainstream opinion (and should be taken as such).
In depth, insightful and well written A review of The Economist Magazine, December 2, 2008 Submitted by: Stan

The Economist is Dynamic to the globe as it represents so many aspects of the econonomy,. From my little corner in rural america where I don't even know if ten other people in my county have ever heard of the Economist magazine. Then I get the privelage to read about other corners big and small all around the globe. That is what makes me an Economist reader and looking forward to each issue. Keep it coming!

The economist offers comprehensive coverage of world news, particularly, of course, from an economic standpoint. The articles are always well written, to the point, and relatively unbiased. If you are looking for one magazine to keep up with fast-changing events, this is it. The weekly format is excellent for this purpose. Highly Recommended.

Adequate for Educational Purposes A review of The Economist Magazine, November 17, 2008 Submitted by: Social Studies Teacher
While I think the content is suitable for my classroom needs, I tend to find the articles rather one sided. I believe in giving students both perspectives of the coin, and don't feel this magazine really does that. But the articles are well written, and have enough content to assist in explaining econoic theory.

Better than terrible, but not quite great A review of The Economist Magazine, November 12, 2008 Submitted by: ConservativeEducator
Some wonderful information about world affairs and economic conditions, but tends toward a condescending view of the United States, especially toward the conservative segment of our nation. Rather disappointing in this respect.
Strong writing A review of The Economist Magazine, November 11, 2008 Submitted by: AnnMarie from Springfield, MA
I ordered this magazine because I know that economics is a weak area of mine and I'd like to raise my awareness on the global economy. I am very pleased to find that it has been a helpful tool to expand my knowledge base. It is written in a way that provides challenge, and does not dumb down the subject matter. I also don't need to have a terminal degree in economics or international business to understand it. I am pleased with this choice.
Additionally, I loved the cover of last week's issue "It's Time". Not only did I post it up at work, but it sparked a great deal of interest amongst my friends, some of whom purchased a subscription.
Keep up the good work!
The best World Perspective A review of The Economist Magazine, November 11, 2008 Submitted by: Keti Colbert from clifton park, ny
I enjoy reading the articles that appear in the Economist magazine because it provides a world view perspective on the social,geo-political and on global economy.
This further offers a comparative analysis of how I as a US citizen fit into the scope of other nations at large. This education is of such that I have often tried to impress upon my teenage sons. I was very happy when my now 21 year old son expressed an interest in the magazine.
I would like to restart my subscription for this purpose.
Thanks

"Liberal" A review of The Economist Magazine, November 11, 2008 Submitted by: Econ Teacher from Council Bluffs, IA
So far, I have found the articles interesting. I felt it was a little unjust to declare Obama the winner before the election, but it was a good way to sway votes and unjustly influence the American people.

There is a reason that The Economist is the most respected newspaper in the world. It offers expert analysis on all of the key issues of the day. Sure the price is high, but it is a small price to be for a year of being well-informed.
Reading the Economist A review of The Economist Magazine, November 11, 2008 Submitted by: charly from Tulsa, OK
The Economist is a very informative magazine. It is filled with articles that are right now topics with added historical references. I would recommend this magazine be read by Sarah Palin as it will help to bring her up to speed. Please send her a subscription for the US in case she runs in 2012.
Wonderful information - Disgusting politics A review of The Economist Magazine, November 6, 2008 Submitted by: PSmith from San Francisco, CA
The Economist is informative, but its editorials and the slant of its reporting is egregiously pro- Neocon / New World Order / western / militarist / Milton Freedman's failed policies / imperialist / colonialist / white man's burden. They have never heard of a Neocon policy that they didn't adore.
They have no idea of a multilateral, multi-polar, multi-ethnic, socially conscious or in any way progressive world view. Nor of anything not jingoistically pro-western. I suspect that because it is British, it may combine a sociopathic corporate world view with the worst snobbery and pretensions of the British class system.
Read it for the facts if you must, but be warned that if you have a heart you will grit your teeth every time your pick it up. I am keeping my subscription until somebody remedies these defects with a competitor. When they do, the Economist will quickly join the Neocons in the dustbin of history. Other than that it is great. :-).
Noam Chomsky says that the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal are the most accurate sources of information, because those running businesses have to have a fairly accurate view of the world. Unlike the view of those who rely on the MSM. Also, he says, the FT does that without the ridiculous editorials of the WSJ, so the FT is 100% accurate reporting.

The Economist standsout for its thorough examination of the economic, political, and social problems here and abroad. As a educator , I can not begin to compare Time, Newsweek, or US News and World Report with The Economist. After years of reading these magazines and as a new subscriber to The Economist , I truly believe it is the best single publication for insight to the cosmic issues we face. I look forward to receiving each issue and wholeheartedly endorse it to other educators.

Pleased with your excellent comprehensive coverage of weekly world news events, but irked by your stubborn irrational right-wing bias A review of The Economist Magazine, October 14, 2008 Submitted by: Ravi from Chapel Hill, NC
My wife and I enjoy your publication for both the breadth of coverage and depth of analysis of the most important world events of the week. We find your magazine to be insightful and thought-provoking. The one criticism we have consistently had over the years is your persistent right-leaning bias and stubborn refusal to acknowledge that you were wrong about supporting the Iraq war and the Wall Street deregulation, despite how both of these judgments have failed miserably and blown up in your face. In a similar vein we are irked by your unfair hostility toward Gordon Brown and Barack Obama, while giving much leeway to George Bush and John McCain and David Cameron.

I really have enjoyed the magazine so far. I'm not as up-to-date on personal financial information as I should be (even though I have been keeping up with the financial meltdown on Wall Street on CNN), and I don't understand everything I read, but the articles are very insightful. I think that I will be learning a great deal about the world's economy & how governments work from this magazine in the next few months. Thank you for such a well-written, well-organized magazine. It's going to make me a smarter person.

I find this magazine, The Economist, to be very fair and very thorough in covering world events. I first read in in Europe at my daughter's house (they subscribe) because it was the only publication in English at hand. I quickly realized what a treasure it was! It is not partisan or biased, in my opinion, but seems to report both sides equally. I appreciate a magazine that gives all the facts and allows me to make my own judgments.

Excellent coverage of world news and excelent writing A review of The Economist Magazine, October 1, 2008 Submitted by: jm-beer
The Economist is what Time magazine used to be with an even broader world news coverage. The English/European style of journalism is fun to read. American journalism tends to be always politically correct. The English/Europeans don't at all mind telling the emperor that his new suit has been a very stupid idea which has exposed his want of mental acuity and other things
I also really like the fact that the magazine, like BBC, gives me a view of America from outside America. The view isn't un- or anti- American, but when America(ns) have the Emperor's new suit on....................

If you are looking strictly for a magazine on the U.S. economy, this is not for you. Business Week would be a better choice. Yet if you are looking at the global economy and each continent, this is the magazine for you. It tends to run a bit left in social issues, but does an excellent job covering all financial sectors fairly. I highly recommend it.
My 1 grip A review of The Economist Magazine, September 17, 2008 Submitted by: tkk from san antonio, TX
There is so much information in each weekly issue that I find myself falling behind. Its not really a problem its just awesome how much world news is neatly compiled in the weekly publication. It almost presents events in a theatrical way; even though you generally need to read at a college level to read and comprehend the articles. That's another reason why I like it, its not dumbed down.
Good magazine! A review of The Economist Magazine, September 9, 2008 Submitted by: Sally from San Francisco, CA

I love this magazine. It covers a ton of topics -- on every subject you could imagine. It gives good exposure to many different world topics from a relatively consistant point of view. The articles are also manageable in size, so you can pick it up and put it down very easily. There are not a ton of advertisements either.

I've heard it said that subscribing to the Economist is a pro forma requirement of being a graduate student or having a graduate degree. I certainly know that when I see strangers on the light rail reading the magazine, I immediately think better of them -- strangers or not. The only thing I'd add is a regular section summarizing contrasting views published in non-U.S. media.
could be better A review of The Economist Magazine, September 8, 2008 Submitted by: Couldbebetter from College Station, tx
The strength of this weekly is its comprehensive, in-depth coverage of most world and US events.
Some of the "weaknesses", for lack of a better word, of the Economist lies in its wilful promulgation of cultral insensitivity - ranging from often almost race-baiting article titles (eg. "Five-ring circus", in reference to the Beijing Olympics, Aug23/29/08, page 35; "Sweet and sour pork", in reference to Chinese inflation, Mar 15-21/08, p.90) to racism-tinged attempts at humor found often throughout the various articles.

The Economist is a great journal. The information is detailed but not so much that it becomes a chore to read. It is not cover with adds like some other newsmagazines (Time, Newsweek, etc..).
The only problem is the cost is high but you get what you pay for.
I would easily rate it a 5 star.

I believe that The Economist is the best source for International News as well as for information about business and the world. Worth getting if you want to stay ahead of the rest of the pack.

The Unrivaled Source for News and Politics A review of The Economist Magazine, December 11, 2007 Submitted by: Michael from Dallas, TX
The Economist is a rare magazine. It is in depth and yet published weekly, comprehensive and yet the articles are short enough not to be intimidating. I actually read it. And I find myself far more informed, and from many more perspectives, than I would be if I only watched TV news, read a national newspaper or a popular weekly like Newsweek. The more lengthy "special reports" are also often worth reading. I subscribe to five magazines, and this is the one that I actually read.

By far the best magazine for world news. A review of The Economist Magazine, December 11, 2007 Submitted by: vkb from Chicago IL, IL
Although the reporting is unashamedly conservatively biased, the facts are generally complete. The US press often ignores inconvenient items that do not support its editorial position. This is much less likely in the Economist, which reports on the entire world, not simply the West.
A non-pc magazine for the non-apologetic WASP A review of The Economist Magazine, December 11, 2007 Submitted by: GoodifyoureaWASP from college station, TX
Weakness: frequent tongue-in-cheek article titles that seem to reflect annoying attempts at weak British humor - one which often does not translate well on this side of the Atlantic, especially since such article titles often seem to reflect an underlying racism on the part of the editors/contributors of the Economist.
Strength: If it weren't for the comprehensive coverage of major global issues and events, I would have cancelled this magazine years ago.
Best Global Perspective Weekly News Magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, December 11, 2007 Submitted by: Stan from Dallas, TX
I have read The Economist for over ten years and consider its global perspective invaluable in my assessment of world news. The Economist comes at its reporting from two important different perspectives than most other news magazines. First, it is based in London and its writers and editors are better able to evaluate the impact of US policies and practices within a world view than are domestic news magazines like, Time and Newsweek. Secondly, the approach of the magazine is more from an economic, business perspective than are other news magazines. Its writing is terser and, to me, more action oriented than that of its competitors. Most experts would probably call The Economist a conservative publication politically, but I have found it extremely moderate and balanced. Its staff supported at the time and still support the US decision to invade Iraq. They have faulted the Bush administration's execution of that war and were among the first to call for the firing of Donald Rumsfeld. Their dissatisfaction with the Bush administration led to their admittedly reluctant endorsement of John Kerry in 2004. They have praised the prosperity brought to Great Britain by the Tony Blair/Gordon Brown Labor Party while still comfortably recognizing the failings of that administration. They have no sympathy for Socialist regimes like that of Chavez in Venezula, but can find the value in left-leaning regimes such as that in Brazil. In summary (at last), The Economist is an important piece of reading for anyone wanting to enjoy a moderate but thorough perspective on global events.
Best world news magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, December 11, 2007 Submitted by: MK from Waukesha, WI
The Economist is the best weekly magazine source for global political and economic news. Written from a British and pro-free market perspective, The Economist provides a refreshing alternative to the US perspectives of Time, Newsweek, and US News and World Report. The Economist is a must-read for anyone interested in global political and economic affairs.
Best News Magazine in the world EVER A review of The Economist Magazine, December 11, 2007 Submitted by: Craig from Champaign, IL
Well, like the title says, its awesome. The articles are in depth, thoughtful commentary, interesting topics. I also like the way that the articles seem to be fairly well balanced, and when it comes to 'choosing a side' it is clear and articulate as to the authors opinion.
Only complaint is that its every week - and that gets too much to read.

The ONE news and finances resource - magazine, newspaper or otherwise A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: Nikki from San Diego, CA
"The Economist" is my favorite source of news. Although they consider themselves a newspaper, rather than a magazine, the format is better that either. Specifically, magazines are too biased in their editorializing and newspapers give little tidbits everyday with stories a hodge-podge of the last weeks current events strung into a single article. "The Economist," on the other hand, gives very in-depth analysis of economics and world politics, while providing enough background information for those of us who don't have the time to individually track each world situation every day.
"The Economist" provides very cogent analysis of statistics, and does not intend to misportray this data to suit their interests. Most impressive, however, is how reading "The Economist" can bolster one's vocabulary.

Best unbiased world news A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: No_Ezines

The magazine is aptly named as I read it largely for the economic articles which help me in my financial and investment decisions.

5 - The best for balanced world news! A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: Dick from Pawlet, VT
My wife and I subscribe to The Economist because it provides a perspective from outside the U.S. that is very helpful. It is extremely well written - at a consistent high level. The magazine is truly dedicated to informing and not given to promoting a one sided view to advance a particular political agenda or to pop culture and sensationalism to sell more magazines. I also like the website that goes with it. The Economist is the best source for balanced world news. Any person who wishes to be well informed should read it from cover to cover.
My wife teaches an Intercultureal Relations course at a community college. She routinely clips articles to use in her class. She finds it to be a tremendously valuable resource.
The best news magazine in the world A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: Badcyclist from National City, CA
If you subscribe to just one magazine, this should be it. It has a clear editorial viewpoint, but even if you aren't a classic, free-trade liberal there is a lot to recommend The Economist. The scope of news is unparalleled, the story selection wonderfully varied, interesting and informative, and the writing is superb.
The Economist consistently stands the test of time. It is the only news magazine where you can read back issues that are months, if not years, old, and they are still (almost) as interesting and thought-provoking as when they were brand new. Try doing that with old Time or Newsweek articles-- you won't get very far.
Arguably the best magazine in the world.
This is the best magazine for a global perspective. A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: Teri
This magazine gives the average American a snapshot view of what is happening in many countries around the world. This perspective includes those countries that most people don't give much thought to on an everyday basis; like smaller and poorer countries in Asia and Africa. This magazine provides a wonderful glimpse into the diverse economies, politics and cultures of our globe. It is well written, insightful, and a great buy for all of the information it provides.

News without the skews A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: Sbuxchris from Fresno, CA
It is refreshing to read a news magazine whose purpose is to provide in depth coverage of current world affairs. All of the U.S. news weeklies have sunk into the depths of news stories for politics sake, or, even worse, stories about personalities, dragging them down with the tabloid fare.
The Economist is a British publication, and you have to accept that when you start to read the articles. The criticism of anything American is done with a friendly shove, very much like a good friend, neighbor, or relative would feel comfortable doing, knowing that you would take the criticism in the spirit it is offered.
Finally, The Economist helps remind you that the world does not only extend from California to New York. The vestiges of the British Empire are alive and well, contained within in depth stories of India, Pakistan and Australia, to name a few.
If you are that rare soul who enjoys getting caught up in an article about the economic resurgance of Argentina, or want some help figuring out if Gordon Brown made a dire mistake in postponing elections, or even if you just want some great cocktail party talking points, The Economist is for you. (It definitely is for me.)

Simply the most thoughtful news magazine in the world A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: C L from Efland, NC
The Economist is arguably the best written, best reported, most comprehensive general news and business magazine in the world. It is generally objective - perhaps with a slight conservative bias - and very international. If you want to know what's going on in the United States, this U.K. publication is the best. There's very little that appeals to pop culture, and a lot that deals with real political, economic and scientific issues and their interaction. It's the magazine for grown ups. It's my check on the other journals I read.

A review of the Economist A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: david from bedford, ma
The Economist is an international magazine with dual emphasis on the United States and its neighbors, and on Britain and its neighbors. This duality is carried to the point that the editing is bilingual, some articles in British English, with American spot translation as appropriate, and some in American English, with British spot translation as appropriate.
Equal time is given to political and to business news. Its editorial position is fairly consistent: it supports responsible business and government, it supports free trade and is opposed to governmental subsidies. It is a believer in market forces.

I've been a reader of The Economist for over 15 years. Over the years I have also subscribed to many other business, technology and culture publications. I can say without hesitation that The Economist is the best of them all by far. It is more than a good publication. Its eloquent and succint articles are excellent nourishment for the thinking reader.
If you believe that business and science articles are dry and boring by nature, then you haven't experienced The Economist. Five Stars.

Best newspaper, could be better A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: Ck07 from Bethlehem, PA
The Economist should be compared to the world's best daily papers, not to newsmagazines. It can and does substitute for the 10+ daily papers that one would have to read to follow events in more than one country.
The Economist could be improved in two ways: First, many articles show poor awareness of the histories of the problems discussed; it makes one wonder about the average age of the staff.
Second, the best daily papers publish important documents either in full or provide links to lthem. The Economist can't do the first but should regularly provide precis and links.
Great Newsmagazine A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: igerovich from New Haven, CT
Most people believe (based on the name of the magazine) that The Economist is a business / economics publication. The Economist is actually a great source of business news and analysis. However, most people seem to overlook the fact that The Economist is also a great newsmagazine. In has in-depth coverage of political and other news from all over the world. You would no longer need a separate subscription to Newsweek, Time, or a similar publication. You can learn all of it and A LOT MORE in The Economist. For those who are specifically interested in news and events in the United States, The Economist offers a large 'United States' section. It covers everything you need to know. You can use The Economist as your newsmagazine even if you have no interest in business and economics.

A must read for all individuals, not just economists, interested in obtaining a comprehensive picture of key social, political and economic developments in the world. Even after reading the wall street Journal, financial Times and the New York Times, I find the Economist has something to add which no other publication offers.

If I was only allowed to read one publication, this would be it. A complete digest of the most important global news. Intelligent analysis, high-quality reporting, and a good balance between different regions of the world. A magazine for the true internationalist.
Everyone should be reading the Economist. A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: Natasha50 from Boston, MA
I highly value the Economist for its breadth and depth of coverege. While many events fall off the radar of newspapers, the Economist follows up on all events and summarizes stories to bring the reader up to date on the entire world. The magazine has helped me through out college and graduate school, makes me more productive and informed for my job, and generally helps one be a well-rounded and informed individual.
Readers should nontheless approach the Economist with a grain of salt, as it is a very opinionated and magazine with a strong libertarian streak.
Best world news magazine in US A review of The Economist Magazine, December 10, 2007 Submitted by: FelixKlein
The magazine has a good nose for selecting the most relevant events in the world in a particular week. For example, they were well ahead of many news organizations in predicting the scandal with the Danish Mohamed cartoons. They were also ahead of everyone in predicting the tensions in Belgium.
Very intelligent and informative writing compared to the traditional US magazine which are looking more and more like tabloids.

The best news magazine in the world A review of The Economist Magazine, December 8, 2007 Submitted by: Serban
If you need one source of news with a heavy dose of business and finance, this is the only weekly magazine you should buy. In addition, it covers science and technology topics for a lay audience very well. Teh Economist packages the most important news and analysis that busy students and executives need. Could not say more except that the price is very good for students and wish I could lock into that rate for 10 years after I graduate.

A thorough and engaging way to read the weekly news A review of The Economist Magazine, December 7, 2007 Submitted by: kp87
The Economist covers more ground than any other news weekly and is also very well-written. The subjects range from news to science and the arts and there is a great deal of information packed into the articles with not a word wasted. The Economist's slant/angle is twofold. First, much of the writing discusses business/finance or describes and analyzes events from an economic perspective, which I find interesting and relevant as well as different from other publications. Second, the writers are staunch capitalists and also hold socially liberal views, although the former is much more noticeable than the latter. With this in mind, The Economist is an informative publication that is well worth your time.
Scholar's Necessity A review of The Economist Magazine, December 7, 2007 Submitted by: FlyingScot
The Economist is sated with all the worldly-paramount information that eludes most forms of media. It is a compilation of intelligence with a sincere disdain for bias which yields nothing less than unadulterated knowledge and the encouragement of personal interpretation.

Best World news weekly A review of The Economist Magazine, December 7, 2007 Submitted by: c
Global and international Perspective on world and U.S. events. Major focus on U.S. and European news but covers the whole world. The editors perspective is from an economist point of view and does not fit clearly into U.S. liberal or conservative camps. More written content and fewer pictures than most other news weeklies, the Economist seeks to educate the reader.
Excellent Source for World News A review of The Economist Magazine, December 7, 2007 Submitted by: Tiff from Berkeley, CA
Reading The Economist is an excellent way to get up to speed on what's going on in the world at large. Especially if don't have time to read newspapers, or you only have access to news sources with a heavy local, non-international focus. (CNN International, for example, is surprisingly US-centric, as evinced by all the hubbub they saw fit to broadcast about Anna Nicole-Smith's death while neglecting the rest of the world's affairs.)
The Economist is also far better than either TIME or Newsweek magazine in presenting a relatively (but admittedly, not always) unbiased view of events, and far better at not including downright silly articles and material.
Possibly the best weekly news magazine A review of The Economist Magazine, December 7, 2007 Submitted by: pb
The Economist summarizes news from around the world each week. Despite its title, it is not wholly, or even primarily, economic in content. It covers politics, economics, social affairs, business, and, in briefer sections, science, literature and the arts. The writing is lively, sensible (if sometimes slightly opinionated), often humorous (in a tongue in cheek way). Unlike Time and Newsweek, the Economist does not aim for a bland, homogenized version of the news. Its political position might be described as radical conservative, but always with a strong, non-ideological, pragmatic stance. I would define myself as a liberal (in the US use of the term), but find that I almost always agree with the Economist's position.

I believe you get a better sense of a situation by reading both US publication and international publications; namely the UK.

This is the best world news magazine. A review of The Economist Magazine, December 7, 2007 Submitted by: earthbound_misfit from Williamstown, MA
I don't agree with advertising/targeting this weekly towards "senior management and policy makers." I'm not those things -- it should say "edited for world news junkies." It's a great way for a busy person (who doesn't buy the NYTimes) to keep in touch with what's happening outside the American bubble. Just the obituary alone is almost worth the subscription price -- cost may seem high compared to Newsweek, Time, WN&R, etc ... HOWEVER ... My smart 6th grader reads those magazines at her grandparents, and I guess I did around that age -- and I think that is about the appropriate age range for those magazines. Well-informed adults should move on. (The E probably has the same amount of "fluff" as Time/Newsweek -- it just happens to be economics-related reports, job postings, proposals, etc.)
Brilliant! A review of The Economist Magazine, December 7, 2007 Submitted by: dtreindl from Washington, DC

Good Global News source A review of The Economist Magazine, August 14, 2007 Submitted by: Concerned Reader
It has a good coverage of news items across the globe. Very few news sources has such a good coverage.
However, it is too opinianated on some issues and foir readers who have little knowledge of a subject matter or issue will come away with the "Economist's" perspective. I feel this is not fair.
It needs to be more balanced in its views.

Ordinarily renewing the Economist is a no-brainer. However, I have been disturbed about the increasingly ideological/political bent of reporting in the Economist. The report on the VPI massacre was more a political polemic than reporting. I will renew this year but next year??

1. The news content of The Economist is global, unlike other popular news magazine.
2. All the articles are well written so reading is a pleasant experience, even when I have to read about a tragedy.
3. I like the special reports the magazine publishes from time to time. They are very informative.
4. The only complain I had with The Economist was not getting my copy on time and sometimes acturally missing a complete issue. Apparently The Economist has s taken steps to prevent this from happening again since it started printing the magazine in Dallas. I am encouraged by the change because my last three issues arrived on Friday as expected.
The Best International News A review of The Economist Magazine, July 15, 2007 Submitted by: Ed from Chicago, IL
The Economist presents the best of internatuional news. The US news coverage doesn't have the usual politically correct slant of domestic news sources. The magazine is thorough, analyticaL and presents facts more than pre-digested opinion. The education level is geared toward a university student or graduate. The bias is slight and seems to represent the secular international business community. The theoretical orientation is toward economics and not politics and is relatively non-idelogical.

I enjoy reading the Economist because of unbiased look at world news and events. It covers every region of the country as well as book reviews, science information and business news. It also does not contain the pages and pages of ads that most American magazines such as Time and Newsweek contain.

The Economist considers itself to be a newspaper, which is to say true journalism. It provides a good global perspective and solid business perspective from the top level and is not just a read for economists. It is one of the most respected publications.
I have read it for several years and in my opinion superb. That, however, is not to say it is perfect as it provides one more opinion, albeit a good one.

There is no publication quite like The Economist if you want to keep up to date on everything that is going on around the world. This is not just an economic weekly, it is an in-depth unbiased anaysis of the "world-in-a-week" with insightful editorials and a reporting style that makes you want to read even the articles on subjects one would find some what tedious. It's a must read for anyone studying or in the fields of economics, finance, world affairs, business, science, international relations.

Certainly not written for fast food consumption. Read it if you want really good analysis. Remember that it has more politics than economics so its not really a business magazine. Only negative is that somehow it recognizes it's superiority in journalism and this comes through in sometimes arrogant writing.

A comprehensive overview of all things important A review of The Economist Magazine, July 12, 2007 Submitted by: Rachel from San Francisco, CA
The Economist is one of my very favorite magazines. I read it religiously, and feel well-versed in the political, business, and general issues of the world today. Though I might not always share the same opinion as the author, I believe all pieces are well-written and give readers food for thought if nothing else. The editorials are fun to read, and I also enjoy the science and technology section. For anyone who cares to know what is happening across the globe, the Economist is a one-stop shop to keep you current and informed. Though I skim other publications, The Economist arms a person with enough information to intelligently discuss current events and hot topics amongst a group of well educated friends. If you are thinking of subscribing, I whole-heartedly recommend that you do! Though it may seem expensive, it is a huge bargain considering the frequency and depth of content; additionally subscribers enjoy full access to the online edition, which is great for reading on the go and represents very nicely on my new iPhone. Take the Economist with you wherever you go and be the smartest one in the room!
A review of The Economist Magazine, July 12, 2007 Submitted by: brontis from Leominster, MA
I am of two opposite minds of The Economist. If I could, I would’ve rated it 2.5 stars.
On the one hand, I rely on it for my sense of ‘being informed’ of political news outside of the U.S., secondly, it gives a (slightly) more objective perspective of U.S. politics than the comparable U.S. weeklies like Time, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report.
I don’t have time to read several journals. I subscribe and read regularly ONLY The Economist. [Not to mention that the above-mentioned U.S. journals don’t even come close to the overall quantity and quality in The Economist.]
Furthermore I get a higher quality reporting on cultural news, book reviews, and science and technology news than I would get elsewhere in any one journal.
Reading The Economist weekly, as part of my weekly routine, I am well satisfied with my state of knowledge of the important news and political events. When/if I require more detail on something I get it online.
In this category I rate it 5 stars. I am well satisfied with the product.
On the other hand, I am offended by the editorial stance, stories, and choice of reporting on certain social issues.
I do not agree with The Economist’s clear position that homosexuality is as normal as heterosexuality, and absolutely no distinctions should be made either in social custom or the law. And I really resent how they sometimes simply rub my face in it (e.g. the gay “kissing” cover) and other times just liberally sprinkle it in seemingly innocuous places.
Also, The Economist has no awareness of the roiling hostility to the fruits of feminism, as they have been visited on many segments of male society. The complete lack of awareness and failure to report on so-called ‘feminist’ issues with even a molecule of criticism and/or skepticism is insulting at best. I recall one small story on Fathers-4-Justice. This is completely unacceptable. The Economist needs to have its awareness raised A GREAT DEAL on the issue of what many are calling The War on Fatherhood.
It is not at all surprising that The Economist’s editorial positions on gay issues and feminist issues are what they are. There is practically a one-to-one mapping of the population of feminists to that of homosexuals. Both share the same objective: the neutering of the patriarchy, be it in the persecution of divorced dads, the rubbishing of civil rights and criminal protections under so-called ‘domestic violence’ and sexual assault regimes, or the push for the acceptance of “alternative lifestyles.”
For this huge flaw in The Economist, I give it zero stars. The average is 2.5, and I elect to round up. Also, I value the positive of what I get from The Economist so much so that I continue to subscribe and read it despite the fact that I am often offended by what I read.

They have great coverage of world affairs and a comprehensive apporach to reporting. Their business and finnance coverage is also thorough and their books and arts are always a must.
Beware, reading The Economist every week requires at least a good 3 hours, so this is no light read! But its totally worth it.
