Universal or Elitist?

Even to those of us who live on the Northwest coast and will never move to New York, The New Yorker keeps us informed about the latest trends in art, theater, music, etc. Sometimes we don't "get" the cartoons. More important to us are its in-depth articles on topics and people of the day. Finally, the quality of the writing is superb.

Excellent Writing and Reporting for Today's Times

The New Yorker has the best writing on both politics and the economy. I depend on it for information and for my sanity.

Challenging

The articles are in depth. These are not quick and easy reading. Vocabulary is all above the fifth grade level ascribed to newspapers. It takes several hours or more to consume. I rarely enjoy the poetry selected. The editors seem to feel the more obscure, the better. Neither am I a fan of most of the fiction. I prefer my short stories with a beginning, a middle, and an end. However, the cartoons alone are worth the price of the subscription.

Can't live without it

Not only is the magazine relevant to the current state of the country and world but it draws on the past and its implications for what to expect. The updates on art and music are interesting although this time in life I can not take advantage of it. I also need the cartoons.

One of the best magazines currently in print

While "The New Yorker" has a lot of current information for those living in New York, most of the magazine contains excellent articles about current affairs around the world. There are also great cartoons, reviews, humorous pieces, and superb fiction. Even though I don't live in New York, I find "The New Yorker" one of the most enjoyable and informative magazines available today.
